Tips for Video Lessons

As parents, we are fairly comfortable with the regular lesson routine -- how to take notes, what to bring to the lesson, how to get ready for the lesson. But throw our world up in the air, and all bets are off. Here are a few tips for making the most of your Video Lesson time: 

• 10 minutes prior to your lesson, gather all your books and notebook
• Make sure you tune your instrument prior to starting with your teacher
• Get the proper set up for a good viewing angle of your student. 
• Set the device so the teacher can see both hands
• Avoid having a bright light or window behind your student

If you are really having a terrible day of unreliable internet connection, try starting the video, putting it on Mute, and talking phone to phone (on speaker phone) with your teacher for the audio. 

Zoom Tips - There are many ways to adjust the sound in Zoom, which can help tremendously: 

• "original sound" should be ON - Go to "audio setting", click "advanced settings" in the lower right, check the box that says "show in meeting option to 'Enable Original Sound' from the microphone."  You will need to turn original sound on in each new video call in the upper left corner.
• Go to "audio settings," then to "Advanced settings," you need to use the setting "disable" for both "Suppress Persistent Background Noise" and "Suppress Intermittent Background Noise." (It thinks the violin is background noise!) 
• Echo Cancellation should be on "Auto."
