Sally Murphy began her musical studies as a Suzuki violinist and started playing piano at the age of 5 and cello at the age of 9. She has since vested her interests in both teaching and performance, and has taught cello and piano privately both in Northern Colorado and throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. She also served as cello faculty at the Rojas School of Music in Grapevine, Texas.
As a performer, Sally was the winner of the Young Artists division of the Colorado State MTNA competition and also went on the win the MTNA West-Central region division. She has held several orchestral positions, including the Greeley Philharmonic, Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, and Owensboro Symphony Orchestra.
As a collaborative pianist, Sally has worked with students in the violin and cello studios at the University of Northern Colorado. She also enjoys accompanying her own cello students in both lessons and recitals, and exploring the creative and musical possibilities in collaboration with young artists.
She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Northern Colorado and a Master of Music degree from the University of North Texas, where she was a graduate teaching assistant and a member of the Bancroft String Quartet and the Center Piano Trio. Her primary teachers have included Barbara Thiem, Gal Faganel, and Nikola Ruzevic. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in cello performance at Indiana University, studying with Peter Stumpf.
