Instructor of Violin

Violinist Flora Nevarez is currently pursuing a PhD in Music Education and violin at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, studying violin and pedagogy with Dr. Brenda Brenner and Mimi Zweig. As Associate Instructor at Indiana University, she has been a faculty member of the IU String Academy since 2017. She holds a Master of Music in Strings Performance, String Pedagogy concentration from the University of Louisville, where she was teaching assistant to Brittany MacWilliams and Sidney King in Applied Violin and Music Education and taught secondary viola; and a Bachelor of Music in violin performance from Western Washington University. Flora has attended the Retreat for Violin and Viola Teachers at Indiana University, the Starling-Delay Symposium on Violin Studies at the Juilliard School, and Suzuki teacher training with Dr. Timothy Durbin (University of Louisville) and Mary Cay Neal (Buffalo Suzuki Strings).

Her previous appointments have included teaching at all levels, from beginner to advanced and collegiate teaching. She has conducted chamber orchestras, coached chamber music, and taught Suzuki private and group lessons for students from underserved communities in Louisville, KY.

Her performances have demonstrated versatility in diverse genres including experimental electronic and new compositions, with an emphasis in improvisation. She is featured on the original motion picture soundtrack to One Day on Earth, the album A Shared Rainbow by Akron, OH-based band Low in The Sky, and the album Mold On Canvas by electronic-acoustic duo Lejsovka & Freund (Trouble Books). An enthusiastic orchestral player, she performs regularly with West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and the Louisville Orchestra.
